True Detective Just Go Hotter

Alexandra Daddario, star of the recent hit movie Texas Chainsaw 3D, Elizabeth Reaser, co-star of the blockbuster Twilight Saga franchise and The Wire alums Wood Harris and Michael Potts have all joined the cast of True Detective, according to several sources. HBO‘s upcoming eight-episode drama series stars real-life buddies Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and is described as an elevated serial narrative with multiple perspectives and time frames. Written by Nic Pizzolatto (The Killing), True Detective will follow an anthology vein similar to FX’s cult-thriller American Horror Story; meaning subsequent seasons of the series may feature a new cast and different storylines.

The project- which has been fast-tracked straight to series status- centers on two detectives, Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives collide and entwine during a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. The investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case was reopened. Michelle Monaghan was recently cast as the female lead, Hart’s wife Maggie. Daddario will play Lisa Tragnetti, a sexy court reporter whose relationship with Hart takes a dark turn for them both. Reaser will play Laurie Perkins, Cohle’s pretty, refined girlfriend, a surgeon who works at the hospital with Maggie, and has dated Cohle for 4 years. Potts will play Maynard Gilbough, a cerebral detective. Harris will play Detective Thomas Papania, Gilbough’s partner. The two question Hart and Cohle about the 1995 case and feel the duo is hiding something.

McConaughey and Harrelson have worked together before on the 1999 Ron Howard comedy EDtv, as well as on the 2008 comedy (if you can call it that) Surfer, Dude. True Detective will mark McConaughey’s first television role as a series regular, after a brief cameo on Sex and the City and recently the HBO comedy Eastbound & Down. For Harrelson, this will bring the star back to his small- screen roots after his breakout role of dumb yet lovable bartender Woody Boyd on Cheers - a role he also reprized on an episode of spin-off, Frasier. Harrelson also had dealings with HBO earlier this year on a Sarah Palin TV-movie, Game Change, starring Julianne Moore as Palin. Harrelson co-starred as Republican strategist Steve Schmidt along with Ed Harris and Sarah Paulson. Monaghan is best known for her film work, including appearances in 2005's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, 2006's Mission: Impossible III and 2007's Gone Baby Gone. Her last regular television role was an eight-episode stint on Fox's Boston Public between 2002 and 2003. Daddario next reprises her role as Annabeth in the Percy Jackson sequel Sea Of Monsters, while Reaser played the lead on the CBS series The Ex List and has done arcs on The Good Wife and Grey’s Anatomy.

Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre) is attached to direct all eight installments of the series, with management company Anonymous Content linked to produce. The company’s Richard Brown, Steve Golin and Brad Dorros will also executive produce along with writer Pizzolatto – and as part of the pickup deal for True Detective, HBO also signed a development deal with Pizzolatto for other undisclosed projects.
